all together, with feeling now, this could be anything

Grey Gardens.

I just watched the HBO film Grey Gardens last night, and it was an incredibly haunting and thought-provoking drama based on the real story and 1973 documentary of Edith Bouvier Beale, Sr., and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale, Jr., aunt & cousin to Jacqueline Onassis.

I felt the HBO effort was a real study of human contradiction and complexity … how two seemingly opposite states can co-exist at the same time – love & resentment, human frailty & strength, heartbreak & unwavering determination, and above all, desolation & beauty.

p.s. There’s also new never-before-seen footage from the Maysles brothers, titled “The Beales of Grey Gardens”, available on DVD here.
